Refund and Cancellation Policy

Last updated October 11, 2026

There are two kinds of payment on The Tourney, and each has its own rules: entry fees, which players and teams pay to an event's organizer, and platform fees, which organizers pay us for using the service.

Entry fees (players and teams)

  • Entry fees are paid to the event's organizer, into the organizer's own payment account. We don't hold them, so we can't refund them ourselves.
  • Each organizer sets their own refund terms for their event. To ask for a refund, contact the organizer. When an organizer approves a refund, they can issue it from The Tourney, and it is returned through the same payment method you used.
  • If an event is cancelled, the organizer decides whether and how entry fees are refunded.
  • When an entry fee is refunded, the payment provider keeps its processing fee from the original payment. This is the provider's policy, not The Tourney's, and it applies to every refund, full or partial: Stripe, PayPal (which also charges 0.30 CAD per refund on Braintree accounts in Canada) and Square. So a full refund costs the organizer that fee. Organizers may keep back at least the processing fee when they refund a withdrawal, and we recommend they say so in their event's refund terms.
  • Disputes about an entry fee are between you, the organizer and the payment provider you paid through.

Platform fees (organizers)

  • Platform fees are owed as registrations come in and are charged to the event's card at the times shown on our Pricing page — before the event, not monthly.
  • If a registration is withdrawn, turned down or cancelled, its fee comes off what you owe: cancelled automatically if it hasn't been charged yet, or, if it has, shown as a credit that's used first the next time fees are charged. Nothing is refunded to the card.
  • If you cancel an event before its fees are charged, nothing is charged for it. Fees already charged are not refunded when an event is cancelled later, except where the law requires it.
  • If we charged you in error — the wrong amount, or a charge you didn't owe — contact us and we'll refund the difference to the card it was charged to.
  • If a card is declined when a fee is due, a failed-payment fee is added, as described on the Pricing page. It is removed if the decline was our error.
  • Every charge is emailed to you as a receipt. Your card statement may show Certamen Inc, the company behind The Tourney.

Closing your account

You can close your account at any time. Platform fees already owed for events that have taken place, or are under way, remain payable.
